Henry Alexander<\/strong> era un cas especial entre els artistes del seu temps. Va n\u00e9ixer a San Francisco en una fam\u00edlia pionera de Calif\u00f2rnia. L’artista va retratar les persones, els llocs i les professions de la seva \u00e8poca. Als 17 anys va viatjar a Alemanya per formar-se, estudiant a la Royal Academy de Munic\u00a0<\/strong><\/a> https:\/\/www.adbk.de\/de\/<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0amb Ludwig von L.fftz i Wilhelm von Lindenschmit, que li van ensenyar a pintar amb un estil prec\u00eds i acad\u00e8mic. Dos anys m\u00e9s tard, va realitzar la seva primera exposici\u00f3 p\u00fablica a Munic.<\/p>\n

Alexander va deixar Alemanya el 1884 i va ser reconegut per les seves obres que retraten treballadors utilitzant les eines i estris del seu ofici. Entre les quals destaca \u201cThe Cap maker\u201d (el fabricant de barrets) \u2013 1884<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>L\u2019obra representa una persona, un home gran, treballant en un taller de fabricaci\u00f3 de barrets o gorres. Assegut davant una m\u00e0quina de cosir i en posici\u00f3 inclinada. L\u2019espai de treballa es veu una mica desendre\u00e7at i una mica descuidat. L\u2019home est\u00e0 ubicat al costat de la finestra per on entra la claror natural, tot i que sembla que el taller est\u00e0 ubicat en un entorn urb\u00e0 i rodejat d\u2019altres edificacions. Com a llum de refor\u00e7 nom\u00e9s te un quinqu\u00e9 d\u2019oli i per aix\u00f2 treballa al costat de la finestra per aprofitar la llum natural.<\/p>\n

Va exposar \u201cThe Capmaker\u201d<\/strong> a la ciutat de Nova York abans de tornar a San Francisco. Mostrat a l’Acad\u00e8mia Nacional de Disseny, va cridar l\u2019atenci\u00f3 del col\u00b7leccionista Thomas B. Clarke, un dels principals col\u00b7leccionistes d’art americ\u00e0 del segle XIX, que posteriorment el va adquirir.<\/p>\n

L\u2019any 1891, quan la pintura es va exhibir a l’Acad\u00e8mia de Pennsilv\u00e0nia, va ser descrita com la representaci\u00f3 de la \u201cpetita finestra d’una antiga mansi\u00f3 que s’ha convertit en un taller. . . . La composici\u00f3 \u00e9s plena de detalls i amb accessoris mec\u00e0nics, tot aix\u00f2 acuradament representat. Fou pintat en una f\u00e0brica de la ciutat de Nova York.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>El 1887, Alexander va deixar San Francisco per anar a Nova York, on s\u2019instal\u00b7la en un estudi a West Tenth Street. Es va su\u00efcidar als 34 anys, i encara que la seva vida va ser curta, Alexandre va deixar un petit per\u00f2 extraordinari grup de pintures que documentaven la vida de finals del segle XIX.<\/p>\n
